When Guests Fail
Recently, a guest didn’t follow the house rules. They were a party of inconsiderations…
- First, they requested I allow their dog – who was really very sweet and I liked it a lot.
- THEN he requested an extra guest outside of the registered ones.
- THEN that guest brought a friend! I had already made a concession for the one extra guest and had set up an air mattress in the loft. Then, the extra guest…. I managed to get them settled for the night.
The next morning I woke early to prepare a hot breakfast of Apple Cinnamon Waffles and Savory Cheese Herb Mini Muffins, with fruit. The guest who booked the room went in and out with the dog, came into the kitchen for something, then back to their room. Then shortly after came out and he and a guest left – leaving the other two. After they saw me cooking. The guests that were left enjoyed a lovely breakfast and went to clean up and prepare to check out. I cleaned up the kitchen and finished my coffee.
Meanwhile, the guests who left called and said that they had missed the tour they wanted to go on and that they were coming back for breakfast…. AARRRGGGHHHHH!!! I did have leftovers so it wasn’t too much of a bother to prepare another breakfast for the two of them.
But, it was definitely the most inconsiderate group of folks I’d had as guests.
What did I learn?
Stick to my guns. If a guest requests an air mattress for extra people, those people are charged the going rate. Their names will be included on the reservation. If they bring another guest that hasn’t been agreed to, they are ALL leaving. As within my rights as an innkeeper, because they didn’t follow the rules. And because they didn’t follow the rules, they don’t get a refund.
